  • Watford Mencap provides support and services to people with learning disabilities and their families in Watford, Three Rivers and Hertsmere.

    They are seeking motivated and compassionate individuals to join their team as a Volunteer Befriender.

    The successful candidates will play a crucial role to enable people with learning disabilities and their families to make the most of life.
     
    As a befriender, your skills, personality and location will be matched appropriately to an individual that has requested support on a one-to-one basis. Every individual has different needs and therefore the person you visit might like to do a range of different activities.

    A few hours of your time could have a lasting impact on the life of someone with a learning disability. Your friendship can help build confidence, reduce loneliness, increase independence, and create meaningful connections within the local community.

    You could be:

    • 💬 Having a chat and checking in on their wellbeing
    • 🚶 Going for a walk together
    • Enjoying a coffee, meal, or trip to a local café
    • 🛍️ Supporting shopping trips
    • 📖 Reading books or magazines together
    • 🎨 Taking part in crafts and hobbies
    • 🏥 Accompanying them to appointments
    • 🌟 Helping develop skills for greater independence

    As a Watford Mencap volunteer visitor you will be:

    • Passionate about supporting people with a with a learning disability.
    • Good sense of humour.
     
    As a Watford Mencap visitor you will:
    • Have the opportunity to help make a difference to the life of the person you visit.
    • Meet new people.
    • Get on-going support and feel appreciated and valued.
    • Receive a personalised volunteer induction and training.
    • Have agreed out of pocket expenses reimbursed. 
     
    DBS will be required and arranged by Watford Mencap. Expenses will be paid.
    Learning Disability awareness and Safeguarding Training will be provided, as well as any other identified training needs. 
     

    PLEASE NOTE: This vacancy is for a Mencap affiliated Network Partner and not for Royal Mencap Society. Network Partners sign up to a terms of membership and pay a membership fee to subscribe Royal Mencap Society’s Network and each local group is a separate and independent charity within their own right.
