Join us and help create safe, supportive homes
We’re excited to be growing our Housing Team and are looking for Housing Officers to join us at an important and positive time of development.
Housing Officers play a key role in delivering high‑quality supported housing services, providing legal and regulatory compliance while helping to create safe, sustainable and inclusive communities for people with learning disabilities.
This role offers a fantastic opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives while contributing to Mencap’s mission and supporting delivery of the Property sub-strategy.
This is a full-time, permanent role (37.5 hours per week), primarily home-based, with travel required to deliver services and to attend meetings at Mencap offices and sites across the UK as required.
Travel requirement:
The posholder will be required to use their own vehicle for business purposes and must hold valid business‑use insurance. While the salary does not include a car or cash allowance, mileage will be reimbursed in line with HMRC rates (45p per mile for the first 10,000 miles per year, and 25p per mile thereafter).
About the role
As a Housing Officer, you’ll take ownership of a designated patch of properties, delivering locality‑based housing management services to tenants with learning disabilities.
You’ll provide proactive, person‑centred support to help tenants sustain their tenancies and feel safe and empowered in their homes. Working closely with tenants, care and support teams, and external partners, you’ll build strong local relationships to ensure our homes and communities are well‑maintained, welcoming and inclusive.
What you’ll be doing
- Tenancy management - manage a designated patch of properties to complete all tenancy related services, including management of rent and service charges, case management and undertaking legal action where required and proportionate.
- Tenant focused working - build positive, collaborative relationships with tenants and, where appropriate, families, advocates and appointees, and external stakeholders.
- Engagement, enforcement and conflict resolution – support investigations to resolve complaints, and positively participate in service improvements.
- Property and estate oversight - carry out regular property inspections and estate walkabouts, managing housing related contracts across your patch.
- Budget and income management - minimise rent arrears and support tenants to pay, undertake annual rent reviews and bi-annual service charge reviews, raise and authorise invoices for works and services.
- Compliance and safeguarding – ensure services offer full compliance and safeguarding reporting.
What we’re looking for
- Experience of housing management, tenancy management or a related field
- Strong organisational skills and ability to manage a varied caseload
- Confident communication skills and a tenant‑focused approach
- Ability to work independently, flexibly and across locations
- Commitment to inclusion, equality and values‑led working
- Experience of working with people with learning disabilities or within supported housing is desirable, but not essential.
What we offer
- A leadership role where your work genuinely makes a difference
- Flexible, mobile working with variety and autonomy
- Supportive colleagues and a values‑led organisational culture
- The opportunity to help create safe homes and sustainable communities
- The chance to be part of an evolving service with a strong social purpose
If you’re committed, proactive, and ready to make a difference, we’d love to hear from you!
Please apply as soon as possible, as we may close the vacancy early if we receive a high volume of applications.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview, which may include a competency-based assessment. Interviews may be held in person or via Microsoft Teams.
