Do you have a learning disability and enjoy meeting new people and sharing your experiences? Would you like to help other people with learning disabilities feel more confident and get involved in sport and physical activity? If so, we'd love to hear from you.
Mencap is looking for a Relief Learning Disability and Sport Co-Trainer to join our team in the South West, mainly around St Austell and Clay Country.
In this role, you will use your own experiences to help deliver workshops, encourage people to be active, and promote inclusion in sport.
What will you do?
As a Relief Co-Trainer, you'll have the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of people with learning disabilities:
- Workshop delivery: Lead parts of workshops, including introductions, icebreakers, setting ground rules and summarising sessions. Support activities and gather feedback from participants.
- Preparation and support: Work with tutors to prepare for workshops, including setting up rooms and materials. Help create and update workshop content to make it accessible and engaging.
- Representation: Represent Mencap in a positive and professional way and promote the inclusion of people with learning disabilities.
What are we looking for?
- A person with a learning disability.
- An interest in sport and promoting inclusion.
- A positive, professional and approachable attitude.
- Confidence in sharing personal experiences and discussing the benefits of sport for people with learning disabilities.
- Ability to challenge negative attitudes constructively.
- Willingness to support wider Mencap Sport initiatives.
What do the workshop hours and delivery look like?
- Workshops are delivered in person (typically 3 hours, plus travel time) or online (typically 2 hours, plus setup and feedback time).
- Flexible availability is required, as workshops may take place during the day, in the evening or at weekends.
- This is a relief worker position, with hours dependent on workshop demand.
- Full Mencap induction and training will be provided.
- We currently estimate up to 5 workshops per year.
- Each workshop requires a minimum commitment of approximately 6 hours, depending on travel requirements.
Travel requirements
This role involves travelling to different venues within the region.
You will need to be able to travel independently from home to workshop locations. Mencap can support with transport planning, but staff may not always be able to accompany you on your journey.
This role is intended for people with a learning disability. We believe lived experience is essential to delivering this work and welcome applications from people with a learning disability who meet the requirements of the role.
