Mencap runs and manages homes across the UK for people with a learning disability, many of which have outdoor spaces that need maintaining. These are important spaces for the people we support to get outdoors and interact with nature, and each other. Your time and skills as a Gardening Volunteer will make a big difference to these people enjoying this special space.
We need a volunteer to come and help with maintaining and improving the garden in one of our residential care homes in Camberley. The garden is medium sized, and would benefit from having a volunteer come to help us out once or twice a month - any day of the week or time is ok!
As a volunteer, you wouldn't need to be an expert gardener, but you will need some gardening experience and be able to work independently to keep the garden tidy.
As a volunteer you could be doing some of the below:
- Pruning and cutting back shrubs
- Creating flower beds
- Cutting the grass, weeding, and potting planters
- Having conversations around the next project the people we support would like to see in their gardens
As a Gardening Volunteer you will be:
- Friendly and Approachable
- Reliable, Kind and Patient
- A good communicator (including listener)
- Be able to work alone and with others
- Willing to volunteer within guidelines and to take direction where necessary
- Accepting of others who might be different to yourself
