The Volunteer Role

We are looking for volunteers to support our Supported Internship Programme in Leeds and Bradford.

We deliver relaxed classroom-based sessions to young people, aged between 16 and 25, to prepare them for work, and support them to improve their numeracy and literacy skills.

Along with Mencap staff and other volunteers, you will be supporting people on a 1:1 basis and in small groups.

You will support them with the session activities, helping to keep them motivated and engaged.

Covid-19 safety

All staff and students are required to sign a confirmation at the start of each session to inform us they have no Covid-19 symptoms.

All surfaces are regularly sanitised, and social distancing adhered to in line with government guidance for educational settings.

About the team

We support adults with a learning disability living in Leeds and Bradford to access volunteering and paid work.

The supported internship programme is a 12-month programme supporting young people into paid work through a structured programme.

The programme includes work experience, which is fully supported by Mencap Caseworkers incorporating progression in English and Maths.

Group sessions include employability skills and support for those who want to gain a further qualification in functional skills Maths and English.

When do I need to be available?

The sessions run weekly in Leeds on Tuesday and Thursday.  Bradford is Monday / Tuesday and Wednesday / Thursday as there are two groups of learners.

You will need to be available from 10am to 4pm for one or more of these days.

Ideally you will volunteer throughout the academic year to enable the participants to get to know you.
