Job Advert

Do you have a passion for Trucks, Dogs or Dr Who? Do you want to share the joy they bring to other people? Would you like to make a difference to the lives of people with learning disabilities?

As a Mencap Visiting Service volunteer, you will be visiting a person with a learning disability in their local community to spend time with them doing the things they want to do. You will be reducing social isolation, helping them to form relationships and supporting them to enjoy activities.

In this role you will be supporting a gentleman who is in his 60's and live in Waterlooville, Hampshire.  He is very interested in anything involving Trucks and Lorries.  He really enjoys going out in the community for tea and cake, and visiting local places like the nearest Harbour and Marwell Zoo. He also loves listening to the radio and watching TV, especially Dr Who!

He enjoys seeing his family and friends, and loves the company of dogs so if you own a dog and are a chatty and caring person, this could be the perfect volunteer role for you!

You will be introduced to each other by a member of Mencap volunteering team and staff who knows him well.

When & where do I need to be available?

Visits will be every 2 months and can be during the week or weekends.  Visits will last around 1 - 1.5 hours or longer depending on what you plan to do.

Before applying please check your journey to make sure it's practical for you.

As a Mencap Visiting Volunteer you will be:

  • Aged 18 or over
  • Friendly, patient and reliable

Benefits

  • Relevant training
  • Induction to the service and volunteer role
  • A settling in period to make sure this is the right role for you
  • To feel fully supported in your role
  • Agreed out-of-pocket expenses to be reimbursed (e.g. travel)
  • The opportunity to meet new people and be part of a diverse team
  • The opportunity to learn new skills
  • To feel appreciated and valued for my contribution
  • Ongoing support from Volunteer Services Coordinator

About Mencap

Mencap is the leading voice of learning disability. We want to see a world where people with a learning disability are valued equally, listened to and included.  We are determined to achieve this by changing attitudes, providing services and influencing those who can help us change the lives of people with a learning disability.

Volunteering with Mencap is YOUR opportunity to help us achieve this, whilst having the chance to develop your skills, meet new people and join a passionate and dedicated team.

The Mencap visiting service (MVS) was launched in 1963 as a befriending service to adults with a learning disability after their parents pass away.

We currently support over 300 people of all ages across the England and Wales.

MVS volunteers reduce social isolation, expand networks and build friendships.

Mencap are strongly encouraging all our colleagues to have the Covid-19 vaccine as a way to help protect each other and the people we support.  This is especially important in direct support roles as evidence is starting to grow that the vaccine could help stop the spread of the virus, as well as protecting the person vaccinated from getting very ill.

In addition, it is mandatory that you take a lateral flow test on the day of your volunteering.
