What does a Support Worker do?

As a Support Worker you will be expected to provide an outstanding level of support that will enormously contribute to the people we support, living a more comfortable, dignified, liberated and happy life.

  • Personal care - helping people to get ready for the day and assisting with bathing, showering and using the bathroom.
  • Supporting people to live independently – budget management, paying bills, house work, organising appointments and cooking delicious healthy meals.
  • Excellent communication skills/relationship building – supporting the person to understand the world around them and promoting positive relationships.
  • Community & Social Inclusion- Supporting individuals to access and participate in their local community and Social events to promote life skills and individuality.

You will be supporting some lovely individuals through floating support, across a number of supported living services within the Wiltshire & Salisbury community – it is due to this style of support that applicants with a driving licence are desirable, but not essential.

The people here all require different levels of support. You can expect to be supporting people with day to day tasks such as; shopping, cooking, eating and drinking, personal care, laundry, finances, medication and administration. You will also support them to organise activities and access the community, to socialise and for leisure, as well as to attend health appointments. There are a wide variety of different personalities, which require a dedicated approach to person-centred support something we are passionate about here at Mencap.

The people we support in Salisbury see many things as being important to them, be it through supporting them in adult life with things like finance and supporting them while preparing meals, or with more general support such as going to new places and talking to people within the community. Aside from day to day support, you will also support these individuals with their hobbies; DC loves a bit of gardening, GR likes relax while watching the birds and BG enjoys a coffee and a chat – who doesn’t enjoy a coffee and a catch up?

Support work is required 24 hours a day, so you must be willing to work flexibly as and when required. Cover is required throughout the week, weekends and bank holidays, with sleep-in shifts as well.

Being a support worker isn’t just about making the day to day life easier, it’s about improving the lives of these lovely individuals, so they can live the life that they choose and certainly deserve. Helping the people we support achieve their goals is one of the most rewarding parts of being a support worker.

We are proud to be a Disability Confident Leader and welcome applicants with disabilities to apply for all roles with us. To find out more about the scheme please visit the directgov website.
