Job Advert

We support a gentleman with a learning disability who is in his 60's. He lives in lovely supported living home with a number of other residents, who are lifelong friends.

He is a very quiet gentleman who enjoys a take away coffee and sitting in his garden taking in the wildlife and fresh air. He loves to get out everyday with support staff to pick up his coffee, and he regularly visits the local pub for a shandy and a bite to eat.

Once you get to know him you could go for a drive in the countryside or stroll in the local area. You could even take a trip to the local garden centre when it's nice a quiet.

He would like a male volunteer and would benefit from a volunteer that has experience of a learning disability.

In this role you will spend time together doing some of the things he enjoy by visiting him 6 times a year. By visiting every other month, you will make a huge difference.

You will be introduced and get to know him with the support of a key worker.

When & where do I need to be available?
  • Visits are every 2 months and can be during the week or weekends.
  • Visits will last around 1 - 1.5 hours or longer depending on what you plan to do.
Before applying please check your journey to make sure it's practical for you.

As a Mencap Visiting Volunteer you will be:

  • Aged 18 or over
  • Friendly, patient and reliable
  • Willing to travel on public transport exploring places of interest

Benefits

  • Make a difference for a person with a learning disability
  • Training & induction to the volunteer role
  • Agreed out-of-pocket expenses (e.g. travel)
  • Mencap Extras – discounts from high street retailers
  • Meet new people
  • We'll value your contribution
  • Ongoing support from our Volunteer Coordinator, who will join you for your first visit

About Mencap

We want a world where people with a learning disability are valued equally, listened to and included. Everything we do is about making this world a reality.

About this service

The Mencap visiting service (MVS) was launched in 1963 as a befriending service to adults with a learning disability after their parents pass away.

We currently support over 300 people of all ages across the England and Wales.

MVS volunteers reduce social isolation, expand networks and build friendships.
