Do you have a creative streak? A kind and patient disposition? Passionate about making a difference to a person with a learning disability?
If this describes you, and you can spare some time just 6 times a year, read on!
We support a wonderful older lady with a learning disability who would love a volunteer to visit. She loves art and crafts, and will happily spend her time at home with her pencils and paints. She will also taking a break to flip through some magazines!
She also enjoys going out for some fresh air, perhaps to a park or out to a café. She is partial to a bit of tea and cake (who isn’t?). When out of the home she uses a wheelchair.
At first visits would be in the home, sitting with her and connecting creatively. After you have got to know each other a little better, you might like to head out of the home for a wander.
She does not communicate verbally, but is clear with her body language and facial expressions. The support staff at her home will help you to learn to communicate with her effectively as you get to know her better.
We are looking for volunteers who are:
- Reliable
- Patient
- Friendly
- Independent
- Accepting of others who are different to yourself
- Able to take instructions
- Over 18
Experience with learning disabilities is not essential, but may be useful.
The Mencap Visiting Service was founded in 1963. It meant that the parents of a person with a learning disability could know that someone would look in on them when they were no longer around. In this volunteer role, you will not only be providing a valuable social visit to this woman, but also honouring the wishes of her parents.
See the role description for more information.
