About Mencap

Mencap is the leading learning disability charity in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. We work with people with a learning disability and their families to challenge prejudice and change laws, and we directly support thousands of people to live their lives as they choose.

Our vision is a world where people with a learning disability are valued equally, listened to and included. Our challenge is to make this world a reality.

Volunteering with Mencap is YOUR opportunity to help us achieve this, whilst having the chance to develop your skills, meet new people and join a passionate and dedicated team.

Job Advert

We are looking for a kind and chatty volunteer to pop in and see a gentleman in his 50’s in his flat in London Colney.

The gentleman is very friendly and chatty, but has been feeling a bit lonely, especially during the pandemic, and would like a companion to pop in and say hello on the weekend. He can feel a bit anxious when he is alone and having someone to spend time with would alleviate a lot of this. He enjoys cooking and chatting and gets on well with a lot of the ladies that live in his building.

He likes to visit garden centres and museums. He enjoys days out and has volunteered previously at a coffee shop. He likes the library and reading and has attended college previously as he likes to learn new skills and information.

It is important that the person who takes this role is caring and understanding and can relax and take it easy. Visits can take place at home but he would love it if you could accompany him out and about in the local area, and maybe even further afield if you fancy an adventure!

The staff who support this gentleman are all fantastic and very engaging.  You will be warmly welcomed by the team; they are full of ideas and information and will help you as a volunteer to settle into the role and get to know the gentleman.

When do I need to be available?

Ideally you will be available for 2 or 3 hours each weekend.  The times are flexible.

We ask for a minimum commitment of 6 months volunteering.

What skills do I need?

  • Friendly and approachable
  • Caring and understanding
  • Reliable and patient
  • Interested in others
  • Accepting of others who might be different to yourself
  • Willing to volunteer within guidelines and to take direction where necessary
  • Good communication and listening skills
