About Mencap

1.4 million people in the UK have a learning disability.

Mencap is the leading voice of learning disability. Everything we do is about valuing and supporting people with a learning disability, and their families and carers.

Our vision is a world where people with a learning disability are valued equally, listened to and included.

Volunteering with us is YOUR opportunity to help us achieve this.

Job Advert

We want to make sure that your voices are shaping what we say to those in power! We want to make sure that your voices are heard and that you can tell us what you think more easily!

Do you want these things too?

Join our team of Volunteer Policy Shapers across England. We are looking for people with a learning disability and families and carers to get involved.

What will I be doing in this volunteer role?

Being a Policy Shaper for Mencap will mean that we will contact you from time to time, mostly via email, to get your views on issues that affect you or the person you support. We might for example:

  • Ask you to fill in a short (easy-read) survey about a particular topic, like health or social care
  • Talk to us about your experience of a particular topic, like benefits, that we might use in our work as a case study
  • Ask you to come to a meeting with us

When will I volunteer?

Once you become a Policy Shaper there are no set days and times you will volunteer.

You will be contacted by the Policy Team on an ad hoc basis, probably around 3-4 times a year, with questions about a particular issue or topic. This will mainly depend on what the government is working on at the time.

We will ask you what topics you are interested in and have experience of when you become a Policy Shaper, so we only contact you about those.

What happens after I apply?

After we have reviewed your application, we will be in contact to tell you more about the role, and find out more about you and what your experiences and interests are. Once we have done this, we will add you to our list of Policy Shapers at Mencap.

All you need to be a Policy Shaper is:

  • Personal experience of learning disability
  • Friendly and approachable
  • Happy to share insights
  • Happy to respond to surveys in a timely manner
  • Interest in shaping what we say to Government
