Job Advert

We are looking for a gentle and patient person to visit a man we support.  He is in his 70s and lives in a nice shared house with other housemates, who also have learning disabilities.

He is a gentle chap who likes to take things nice and easy.  He does enjoy going out for a bite to eat or a cup of tea in a nearby cafe or visit a place with animals.

You will spend time with him joining in with his favourite activities. Visits can take place at home but once you get to know each other you might like to venture out for a few hours.

He will enjoy spending time with a friendly volunteer like you who have plenty of time and patience. By visiting every other month, you will make a huge difference.

You will be introduced and get to know him with the support of Mencap staff.

When & where do I need to be available?

Visits are every 2 months and can be on weekdays, late afternoon.

Visits will last around 1 - 1.5 hours.

He lives in the St Anthony's Hill area of Eastbourne, a short walk from the seafront and lots of local shops and cafe's.

Before applying please check your journey to make sure it's practical for you.

As a Mencap Visiting Volunteer you will be:

  • Aged 18 or over
  • Friendly, patient and reliable

Benefits

  • Make a difference for a person with a learning disability

  • Meet new people
  • We'll value your contribution
  • Ongoing support from our Volunteer Coordinator, who will join you for your first visit

About Mencap

1.5 million people in the UK have a learning disability.

We have an ambitious vision for the UK to be the best place in the world for people with a learning disability to live happy and healthy lives.

Volunteering with Mencap is YOUR opportunity to help us achieve this, whilst having the chance to develop your skills, meet new people and join a passionate and dedicated team.

The Mencap visiting service (MVS) was launched in 1963 as a befriending service to adults with a learning disability after their parents pass away.

We currently support over 300 people of all ages across the England and Wales.

MVS volunteers reduce social isolation, expand networks and build friendships.

Mencap are strongly encouraging all our colleagues to have the Covid-19 vaccine as a way to help protect each other and the people we support.  This is especially important in direct support roles as evidence is starting to grow that the vaccine could help stop the spread of the virus, as well as protecting the person vaccinated from getting very ill.

In addition, it is mandatory that you take a lateral flow test on the day of your volunteering.
