About Mencap

At Mencap we work in partnership with people with a learning disability. We do this by providing high quality, flexible services that support people, including young adults, to live as independently as possible in their own homes and in the community.

Everyone wants a purposeful job - to do something meaningful. At Mencap, we can give you that. You will have opportunities to develop as a person, colleague, leader and activist.

You’ll make new friends and feel inspired to reach your potential. We will ask a lot of you - but you’ll get back so much more. With us, it is never ‘just a job’.

In return for your hard work and passion, we can give you real meaning and purpose in your work.

Job Advert
We currently support three gentlemen in a little cosy bungalow in the picturesque South Devon countryside town of Totnes.

One of the men you will be supporting loves things and gadgets: torches, flasks, keys, oven gloves, and his iPad! He loves interacting and sharing a joke with his support workers, friends and family and going out into the community for a coffee and down to the Learning Disability Centre in Totnes.

Another is a gentle man who really likes his environment just as he wants it. If there are things in the ‘wrong’ place, he will let you know about it. He really likes to smile and chuckle to himself and will sometimes even ‘bunny hop’ to show you how happy he is. He gets a lot from his Swimming sessions at the Hydrotherapy pool, and goes up to three times a week!

The third person we support loves to be active and alert; to get to the Hydrotherapy Pool twice a week (he won’t want to get out!) and get out into the parks or the countryside to walk and kick his football about safely.

Some of their favourite indoor activities include painting, games, watching television or DVDs and watching Staff cook, especially if they are cooking their favourite and it smells nice! As well as the team that support them, their families are very important and they enjoy visiting them at home or going out for lunch with them and getting cards and gifts to mark special occasions.

All three have their very own Mobility Vehicles (two are adapted for wheelchairs), therefore it is essential you have the ability to drive. The people we support also attend the local Learning Disability Centre here in Totnes, for either 4 or 5 days per week. Weekends are usually a combination of trips out based on the choices and preferences of the people we support, and time spent recuperating or resting from a busy week.

As well as the above, the people we support have a high level of need with, in particular, challenges relating to Eating & Drinking (Choking), Epilepsy, Mobility (they use equipment such as wheelchairs, handling belts, rollators depending on the activity and environment), high levels of personal care and some health needs.

If you would like to help support these friendly and sociable people to live life to their fullest then, please apply and tell us why you would be a fantastic match. We seek to include the people that you will support during all of our selection process and we take a person centred approach to recruitment.
