Job Advert
Are you sociable, a good listener with excellent writing skills?  Do you have an interest in disability issues and social history.  If so, this could be the perfect volunteering role for you.
We support two ladies with a learning disability who are in their 70’s and 80’s.  They live in a Mencap supported service in Brighton.
The ladies have an incredible story about their time living in a big institution for people with learning disabilities for almost 40 years from the 1950’s till the 1990’s.   They are currently in the process of getting their story down on paper.

This period of their lives is very important to them and they enjoy retelling stories from their time there.  To ensure their stories aren’t lost they would like to capture them and their memories and turn them into a book.

We are looking for a volunteer with editing and book writing skills. Having an interest in social history and an understanding of what these types of institutions were about is useful but not essential.
To be our Memory Capture you need:
  • A high standard of written English
  • Experience of writing and editing
  • To be 18 years of age or older
  • To be friendly and approachable
  • To be reliable and patient
  • To be interested in others
  • To be accepting of others who might be different to yourself
  • To be willing to volunteer within guidelines and to take direction where necessary
  • Good communication and listening skills

We can be flexible when it comes to times of volunteering but would prefer to set aside a regular weekly or fortnightly commitment until the book has been written and completed.

Please note we will need to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check for the successful applicant.
