Job Advert

You will spend time with a local man with a learning disability, visiting every 2 months.

He is a friendly man in his 60s living in Chertsey who loves spending time with people and getting to know them. He particularly enjoys male company.  He also enjoys listening to 50's and 60s music, watching retro gameshows on TV and playing Bingo! He loves chatting, going for a short walk to the local shop and helping around the house and garden - especially looking after his chickens!

He has few visitors and doesn’t see many people except his housemates and care staff. That’s where you come in – by visiting every other month you will make a huge difference. He will enjoy spending time with a fun and friendly volunteer who can give him some special attention and do activities with him.

You will be introduced to each other by a member of Mencap Volunteering Team and staff who knows him well.

When & where do I need to be available?

Visits will be every 2 months and can be week days or weekends. Visits will probably last around 1 – 2 hours. The exact times can be flexible to your availability but we ask for a minimum commitment of 1 year.

Before applying please check your journey to make sure it's practical for you.

As a Mencap Visiting Volunteer you will be:

  • Aged 18 or over

  • Ongoing support from Volunteer Services Coordinator

About Mencap

Mencap is the leading voice of learning disability. We want to see a world where people with a learning disability are valued equally, listened to and included.  We are determined to achieve this by changing attitudes, providing services and influencing those who can help us change the lives of people with a learning disability.

Volunteering with Mencap is YOUR opportunity to help us achieve this, whilst having the chance to develop your skills, meet new people and join a passionate and dedicated team.

The Mencap visiting service (MVS) was launched in 1963 as a befriending service to adults with a learning disability after their parents pass away.

We currently support over 300 people of all ages across the England and Wales.

MVS volunteers reduce social isolation, expand networks and build friendships.

Mencap are strongly encouraging all our colleagues to have the Covid-19 vaccine as a way to help protect each other and the people we support.  This is especially important in direct support roles as evidence is starting to grow that the vaccine could help stop the spread of the virus, as well as protecting the person vaccinated from getting very ill.

In addition, it is mandatory that you take a lateral flow test on the day of your volunteering.
