About Mencap
The Mencap Visiting Service supports older people with a learning disability who are often isolated and with little or no family. As a volunteer your visits will provide fun and companionship and an opportunity to do things the person enjoys.

You will spend time with a local man with a learning disability, visiting every 2 months..

He is in his 70s and lives with a caring family environment with a lovely couple.

He is independent and enjoy his weekly routine attending a variety of groups and activities for people with learning disabilities.  Due to the current pandemic however many of these activities are on hold. 

He enjoys a stroll around the local countryside, nearby beaches and seafronts as well as visiting surrounding villages and towns.  Ideally you will have a car and be able to take him for a ride to places of interest or somewhere to enjoy lunch or afternoon tea together.  

Initially, visits will be based at his home with the support of Mencap staff and his carers.

Visits will be every 2 months and can be weekdays or weekends. Visits will probably last around 1 - 2 hours. 

As a Mencap Visiting Volunteer you will be :

  • Reducing social isolation of people with a learning disability
  • Increasing the independence and confidence of individuals with a learning disability
  • Enabling people with a learning disability to fully access their local communities 
  • Volunteers must be aged 18 or over
  • Personalised training and induction
  • To feel fully supported in your role
  • Agreed out-of-pocket expenses to be reimbursed (e.g. travel, a meal out with the person you visit)

  • Feel appreciated and valued
