About Mencap

Mencap is the leading voice of learning disability. We want to see a world where people with a learning disability are valued equally, listened to and included.

We are determined to achieve this by changing attitudes, providing services and influencing those who can help us change the lives of people with a learning disability.

Volunteering with Mencap is YOUR opportunity to help us achieve this, whilst having the chance to develop your skills, meet new people and join a passionate and dedicated team.

Role Description

As a Mencap Visiting Service volunteer, you will be visiting a person with a learning disability in their local community to spend time with them doing the things they want to do. You will be reducing social isolation, helping them to form relationships and supporting them to enjoy activities.

In this role you will be supporting a lovely 64 year old lady in Poole who lives in supported living accommodation with one other gentleman. She loves being out in the community, going shopping and for something to eat! She also enjoys being at home, spending her time listening to music, cooking, playing games (especially puzzles) and colouring in!

Due to her limited mobility, she uses a wheelchair both inside and outside of the home. She has limited verbal communication but she loves people sitting with her and participating in the activities she enjoys. You will be introduced and get to know the lady with support of staff, and we believe that having a Mencap visiting volunteer will make a huge difference to her.

In your role as a Mencap Volunteer Visitor you will make 6 visits per year, either on a Monday or Friday morning, or on the weekend.

Please note this lady would prefer a female visiting volunteer.

The Mencap visiting service was launched in 1963 and was designed to be a befriending service to adults with a learning disability for after their parents passed away.
