About Mencap

Mencap is the leading voice of learning disability. We want to see a world where people with a learning disability are valued equally, listened to and included.

We are determined to achieve this by changing attitudes, providing services and influencing those who can help us change the lives of people with a learning disability.

For more information about what is a learning disability click here.

Volunteering with Mencap is YOUR opportunity to help us achieve this, whilst having the chance to develop your skills, meet new people and join a passionate and dedicated team.

Role Description

In this role you will be supporting Cheryl who lives in Newton Abbot. She loves walking into the local town and taking bus trips around the area. She also enjoys going out for a drive to her local garden centre Fermoys! At home she loves knitting, reading books and listening to music, especially ‘The Seekers’.

She would really enjoy having someone to take her out to do some of her favourite activities or stay in for a Knit and Knatter!

The Mencap visiting service was launched in 1963 and was designed to be a befriending service to adults with a learning disability for after their parents passed away.

As a Mencap Visiting Service volunteer, you will be visiting a person with a learning disability in their local community to spend time with them doing the things they want to do. You will be reducing social isolation, helping them to form relationships and supporting them to enjoy activities.

You will make 6 visits per year and we would hope that you would be able to volunteer for at least 1 year. Cheryl is looking for a visitor volunteer either on a Monday or Thursday afternoon.
