Job Advert

We support a lovely lady in her late 60's who has a learning disability. She lives in a shared lives house.

In the beginning you will get to know her by making regular phone calls to her carer and maybe video calls and then as soon as the current pandemic restrictions allow it and it is safe to do so you will be introduced to her in person. She would like a female volunteer.

She is a lovely lady who really enjoys going out to the shops and to the cinema. One of her favourite things to do is go to Barry Island for fish and chips.  She really enjoys listening to music – Roy Orbison and Cliff Richard in particular! She loves to watch dancing and singing programmes on the TV too.

Visits will take place at her home initially, but once you get to know each other you could go out and decide together where you will go on your next adventure!

She would like a female volunteer.

She will enjoy spending time with a friendly volunteer like you.  By calling and then visiting every other month, you will make a huge difference.

You will be introduced and get to know her with the support of her carer.

When & where do I need to be available?

Calls will be every month and then once restrictions are lifted visits will be every 2 months and can be during the week or weekends.

Visits will last around 1 - 1.5 hours or longer depending on what you plan to do.

Before applying please check your journey to make sure it's practical for you.

As a Mencap Visiting Volunteer you will be:

  • Aged 18 or over
  • Friendly, patient and reliable

Benefits

  • Make a difference for a person with a learning disability
  • Training & induction to the volunteer role
  • Agreed out-of-pocket expenses (e.g. travel)
  • Mencap Extras – discounts from high street retailers
  • Meet new people
  • We'll value your contribution
  • Ongoing support from our Volunteer Coordinator, who will join you for your first visit

About Mencap

About this service

The Mencap visiting service (MVS) was launched in 1963 as a befriending service to adults with a learning disability after their parents pass away.

We currently support over 300 people of all ages across the England and Wales.

MVS volunteers reduce social isolation, expand networks and build friendships.
